Ø The purposes of this study were to
determine the effects of oviposition time on egg quality and to examine the
possibility of estimating egg shell weight using a formula. The interaction=
s in
some egg quality measurements were also studied. During the experiment. 80
white and 64 brown layers were housed in cages and fed with a standard layer
ration. The birds were given 17 hours of light per day throughout the
experiment. Egg quality was checked four times with two week intervals. At =
each
check, eggs were collected at 09.(oo), 12.(oo) and 15.(oo), on consecutive
days. Egg weight (EW), egg specific gravity (ESG) and shell weight (SW) were
measured, and then shell ration (SR) and shell weight per unit surface area
(SWUSA) were calculated. In addition, the SW was estimated by two formulae
using EW and ESG. The data from white and brown layers were analysed
separately. The effects of oviposition time and age of hens were tested with
variance analysis. The correlation coefficients between quality measurements
were determined. The effect of age was not significant (p>0.05). Collect=
ion
time had a significant (p<0.05) effect on the EW of white and brown laye=
rs.
For the two groups, the heaviest EWs were determined at the first collection
time, and the lightest EWs at the last time. Although the measured SW was n=
ot
affected by the collection time, it was highest at the first collection.
Significant correlations were detected between measured and calculated SW (r
between .6612 and .8521, p<0.01 overall). The ESG was more closely
correlated with SR and SWUSA than with SW. In addition, negative correlatio=
ns
were found between EW and ESG as well as with SR.

Ø Total and individual tocopherol con=
tents of
sunflower oil, processed either by chemical refining (CR), physical refining
(PR) or soft column deodorization (SCD) methods were investigated. Total
tocopherol content gradually decreased until the end of the refining process
(the deodorization stage). Among the refining methods used CR and PR caused
higher losses in the tocopherol content when compared with the SCD method. =
The
content of alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta -tocopherols also decreased as a
result of the refining process. These significant losses in beta- and gamma
-tocopherol contents were determined after the deodorization stage.

Ø =
In the
present work, the heat transfer and friction loss characteristics were
investigated experimentally, employing a finned heating surface kept at a
constant temperature of 45°C
in a rectangular channel through which air was passed as working fluid. The
position of the cylindrical fins attached on the surface was arranged either
in-line or staggered. The parameters for the study were chosen as Reynolds
number (3700–30 000), depending on hydraulic diameter, the distance
between fins in the flow direction (Sy/D=3D1.96–4.41) and fin arrange=
ment.
The variation of Nusselt number with these parameters was determined and
presented graphically. For both fin arrangements, it was found that increas=
ing
Reynolds number increased Nusselt number, and maximum heat transfer occurre=
d at
Sy/D=3D2.94. Correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor were devel=
oped
for both fin arrangements and smooth channel, and the thermal performances =
of
the arrangements were also determined and compared with respect to heat
transfer from the same surface without fins. With the staggered array, a he=
at
transfer enhancement up to 33% at constant pumping power was achieved

In this research Brevibacterium linens was inocula=
ted
to Kashar cheese with two different methods. Each group of fresh cheese was
packed in plastic films (PA/PE) at 1 day intervals. During the storage peri=
od
(1 month) changes in some physico-chemical, microbiological and sensory
properties and colour intensities of the cheeses were examined. According to
the results obtained, inoculation of Brevibacterum linens into the cheese m=
ilk
or onto the cheese surface affected most of the physico-chemical properties
such as dry matter, fat, water soluble nitrogen and titratable acidity
significantly (p<0.01). Due to the high proteolytic and lipolytic activi=
ty
of the Brevibacterium linens, the cheeses treated with this culture had the=
lowest
organoleptic scores. At the end of the storage period a majority of the
panellists noticed a fishy ammoniacal flavour in the cheeses inoculated with
Brevibacterium linens. No significant changes in the development of the col=
our
intensity of the cheeses were determined.

erformances
of trotters and development of a genetic model in order to estimate genetic
parameters for German trotters. Data on 6,611 trotters with 163,322 records
during 1997 and 1999 were analysed with a repeatability animal model using =
each
individual start of trotters and pedigree information of up to I I generati=
ons
(13,202 horses). Besides the driver effect, the genetic model included
year-season, age and sex of trotter, racing track, distance and condition of
race track as fixed effects as well as additive genetic and permanent
environmental effects as random effects. Traits analysed were square root of
rank at finish, racing time per kin and the logarithms of earnings per star=
t.
Ignoring the effect of driver resulted in an overestimation of heritability=
of
60, 24 and 44% for rank at finish, racing time and earnings, respectively,
which shows the necessity to include the driver effect in the model. Drivers
regarded as fixed or random effects resulted in a marginal change in
parameters. Heritabilities based on the model with fixed driver effect were
0.05, 0.29 and 0.09 for ranks at finish, racing time and earnings, respecti=
vely.
Genetic correlation between rank and racing time was 0.81. Both traits were
highly correlated with earnings of -0.98 and -0.89 for ranking and racing t=
ime,
respectively. Most important trait for selection of racing performance was =
the
racing time due to its substantial higher heritability and its high genetic
correlation to earnings. Additionally, rank at finish has to be included in=
the
breeding goal because it reflects more the potential of trotters to win at
finish and accounts for records without earnings.<=

Ø The production of lamb meat is of h=
ighest
economic value in sheep production. For efficient production of slaughter
lambs, the main breeding goals are high reproduction of ewes and high
improvement of fattening and carcass composition performances. Objectives of
this study were the development of a genetic statistical model for estimati=
on of
breeding values for fattening and carcass traits recorded on field-tested m=
eat
sheep from Schleswig-Holstein and the estimation of the genetic parameters =
of
these traits. Data on meat sheep breeds of German white-headed meat sheep
(GWHS), German black-headed meat sheep (GBHS), German Texel (GTS) and Suffolk were avail=
able.
Traits analysed were live weight gain (LWG), body composition score (BC) and
general type (GT) as well as ultrasonic measurements such as muscle depth (=
MD)
and fat depth (FD). For all breeds an average LWG of 362 g/day was calculat=
ed
and live weight gain of each breed was 371, 316, 354 and 364 g/day for GWHS,
GBHS, GTS and Suffolk.
respectively. Heritabilities of LWG for different breeds ranged between h(2=
) =3D
0.26 and 0.60. Body composition score showed heritabilities of moderate
magnitude (h(2) =3D 0.23 to 0.39). Genetic correlations between BC and LWG =
ranged
between r(g) =3D -0.08 and 0.57. Even lower heritabilities were obtained for
general type (h(2) =3D 0.09 to 0.33). Genetic correlations of GT and LWG we=
re of
moderate magnitude with r(g) =3D 0.33 to 0.59. except of Suffolk. High genetic correlations were
estimated between GT and BC (r(g) =3D 0.61 to 0.93). For GTS, heritabilitie=
s of
muscle depth and fat depth were h(2) =3D 0.15 and 0.14, respectively.
Corresponding estimates for Su=
ffolk
were h(2) =3D 0.20 and 0.21. respectively Genetic correlations between meas=
ured
MD and visually scored BC were r(g) =3D 0.43 and 0.64 for GTS and Suffolk, respectiv=
ely.
Based on the results, it was concluded that lower variation of age at end of
test would result in more reliable breeding values for fattening, exterior =
and
carcass composition traits. Visually scored body composition should further=
be
used as indirect trait for carcass composition in the genetic evaluation
Ultrasonic measurements gave mon information about carcass composition rela=
tive
to body composition score and should be included in the genetic evaluation,
although their heritabilities were low. Therefore, improvement of the accur=
acy
of ultrasonic measurements is necessary to obtain more informative traits f=
or
carcass composition of live animals.

Ø Oral stereotypes are a kind of the =
forms of
behavioural abnormalities and many husbandry factors can cause the developm=
ent
of such behaviours in almost all domestic species. In this study, effects of
housing based on group condition and also sex differences on the developmen=
t of
oral stereotypes were investigated in fattening lambs. Ten male and ten fem=
ale
Turkgeldi synthetic breed of lambs were used. Animals were assigned to sex
groups at the beginning of the study and housed in pens that consisted of m=
etal
feed through and water buckets on a straw bedded floor during the experimen=
t.
Behavioural observations were taken by two observer and time sampling techn=
ique
was used. Activities such as biting, licking and chewing of through, water
bucket and also bars of pen were recorded as oral stereotypes, Generally, it
was indicated that intensive group condition in fattening lambs causes the
development of behavioural abnormalities related to nutritional origin.
Activities towards the bedding material, standing, lying and wool chewing
behaviours were significantly affected by sex. The male lambs showed more
activities in standing and wool licking and wool chewing behaviours than the
females while the lying and activity towards the bedding material observed =
more
frequently in the female group. This finding indicated that general activity
was high in the male lambs. There was no significant sex effect on the total
oral stereotypes. It was concluded that lack of structural materials have an
important role in the development of oral stereotypes. Ln addition some
stressful conditions that caused by group housing may also resulted in the
development of such abnormalities especially for the male lambs.

Oslash; Previous cytogenetic studies of the=

Bromus L. were limited to chromosome counts and construction of karyotypes =
on
the basis of Feulgen staining. Since the chromosomes of Bromus are similar =

morphology, these karyotypes are of limited use for chromosome identificati=

and genome analysis. The objectives of this study were to develop and evalu=
ate
a Giemsa C-banding procedure to use in identification of individual bromegr=
ass
chromosomes and to develop a karyotype for diploid Bromus riparius Rehm. (2=
n =3D
14; PI 440215). All chromosomes had one or more C-bands which were located
mainly at telomeric regions. A group (I) of four pairs of chromosomes had
telomeric bands on only one arm and could be differentiated. In this group,=
one
pair had an interstitial C-band along with a telomeric band, one pair had a
nucleolus organizer region (NOR) at a subtelomeric location on the short ar=
m,
and the other two pair could be distinguished by centromere location. The o=
ther
group (II) of three pairs of chromosomes had telomeric bands on both arms. =
The
unequivocal identification of specific chromosomes of Group II was not poss=
ible
in all cells because of their similarity and differential condensation of
chromosomes. Chromosomes of both groups were either metacentric or
submetacentric. The total length of individual chromosomes ranged from 5.58=
to
6.87 µm and the arm ratios ranged from 1.02 to 1.5. The homologous
chromosomes were paired and assigned numbers I to VII in decreasing length.=
A
karyotype was constructed by means of the C-bands, mean chromosome lengths,=
and
arm ratios. The C-banding procedure used in this study could be used to
developed karyotypes for the other species of the genus Bromus and these
C-banded karyotypes could be used to compare genomes within the genus.=

The time for planting and seeding establishment is a crucial phase in t=
he
production cycle, especially for annual crops. Uniformity and percentage of
emergence of direct-sown crops can have a great effect on the yield and
quality, particularly for vegetables. Obtaining a desired plant stand depen=
ds
on a good germination and emergence. The seeds can germinate under favourab=
le
environmental conditions, except for internal factors which can effect seed
germination. The main environmental conditions are suitable temperature,
composition of the gases in the atmosphere, light for certain seeds, and wa=
ter.
At the beginning of germination, the intake of water by seeds is essential.
During imbibition, the seed absorbs water until a particular equilibrium. T=
he
seed then remains at this water content while the metabolic processes requi=
red
are activated. The water content then increases again when the radicle begi=
ns
to grow. The imbibition rate is influence by the initial seed moisture leve=
l.
Meanwhile, the moisture content of a seed plays a major role in the agronom=
ic
life cycle (e.g. in germination and storage) and the water status of seeds =
and
soil directly affect germination and stand establishment. In this paper, the
importance of water and seed moisture contents on seed germination is revie=
wed.

Abstract
Ø
The response of onion (Allium c=
epa )
to different irrigation schedules was studied in Trakya, Turkey,
during 1997 and 1998. Onion crop was subjected to four irrigation treatments
according to available soil water depletion fractions (0.30, 0.50, 0.70, an=
d no
irrigation). Irrigation thresholds (amount of soil water at 0.40 m depth) were u=
sed as
criteria to initiate drip irrigations. For each differential water treatmen=
t,
the parameters of bulb morphology (diameter and height), solids soluble in
bulbs, bulb weight, and total yield were analysed. Yield and yield componen=
ts
except solids soluble in bulbs were affected by irrigation and soil water
depletion fractions. The highest yield was obtained from the plots to which
irrigation water was applied at a soil water fraction level of 0.30. The
maintenance of soil moisture depletion level at 0.30 required 339.4 mm (in 14
applications) and 2=
27.2 mm
(in 13 applications) of irrigation water in 1997 and 1998, respectively. The
seasonal evapotranspiration of onion was 420.0 mm in 1997 a=
nd 351.2 mm in 1998. =

well as bibliographical sources, and gives the distribution and economic
importance of each species. Forty-five mite species belonging to 20 families
were found. The most common and important pest was Phytoptus avellanae Nal.,
present as both “gall” and “vagrant” forms.
Cecidophyopsis vermiformis (Nal.) was also common in hazelnut orchards but =
has
less economic impact than P. avellanae. Tetranycopsis horridus (Can. &
Fanz.) was also important, but only on a local scale. Minor pests, widespre=

but not important, included Aculus comatus (Nal.), Tegonotus depressus Nal.,
Coptophylla lamimani (Keifer), Anthocoptes loricatus Nal., Eotetranychus co=

Ø In Turkey, despite the fact=
that
history of the pistachio nut has a great economic importance, especially in=
the
GAP region, and extends to a long way back; the amount of production has not
been achieved at the expected rate. Average yield per pistachio tree is 2 kg and the average p=

production is 46 000 tonnes, currently. Because, in this region, the pistac=
hio
nut is grown under dry climate conditions and in barren soil. Additionally,=
pistachio
growers are not trained well enough about mechanization. This research was
conducted to determine mechanization possibilities of pistachio and the post
harvest handlings. It consisted of two parts, first the compilation of surv=
ey
results which were obtained from farmers dealing with pistachio and the sec=
ond
part includes the results of post harvest processing of pistachio. For this
reason, pistachio nut growing practices, general farm, soil cultivation, pe=
st
controls (chemical control), fertilizer application, pruning, harvesting,
drying, dehulling and storage have been examined.

Ø Recently, considerable redu=
ction
in genetic advance in egg production led the researchers to revise the curr=
ent
breeding methods. Low genetic variance in the first two-third part of the e=
gg
production period emphasised the importance of last one-third part of egg
production period. The genetic advance can be obtained by improving persist=
ence
in this period. Therefore, egg production test period should be increased. =
In
order to estimate egg production variance and covariance components with le=
ss
deviation, box-cox transformation is used as appropriate to restore normali=
ty
and to homogeneity. Thus a better genetic advance can be obtained from a
selection considering breeding values estimated from data on which box-cox
transformation carried out. In the review, it is suggested that inbreeding =
for
egg production in laying hens does not cause any problem in a short period.=
In
addition, genetic variance of egg production should be separated from
non-additive genetic effects.

Ø
Türkiye has a great
potential for animal production and the topographic and climatic conditions=
are
favorable for animal husbandry in general . Even though Türkiye is amo=
ng
the leading countries in the nımbers of some of the livestock , the an=
imal
productivity sometimes can be quite low due to the high numbers of low prod=
ucing
, umimproved native animals. Nevertheles, the adaption capacity of these
indigenous animals , to the local conditions is hiher than cultural breeds.
Native farm animal genetic resourches constıtute an important resource=
in
total number of farm animal population . Production systems in Türkiye
vary from chances in international and national agricultural policies and in
the milk and beef markets had greatest effect to the production systems and
changing the content of population from native breeds to the exotic breeds.=
The
unsufficient productivity of native breeds resoned the declining trend of t=
he
native farm animals in total animal population . Breeds of low economic val=
ues
were investigated in the begining of the republican period and shoved that =
the
selection would be ineffective to obtain the production values same as exot=
ic
breeds. Cattle population of Türkiye is approximately 11 million heads=
and
sheep and goat populations of this country are 29 and 8 millions,
respectively.Türkiye ranks among among the leading countries in the
population of cattle sheep and goat . Native cattle breeds accounted for 75=
% of
the total cattle population in the country and are consisted of mainly Nati=
ve
Black , Anotolian Red , Native Grey, Southern Red and Yellow native breeds.
However native sheep breeds of Türkiye comprise almost 94% of the total
sheep population and the native breeds are primarily Kıvırcı=
k,
Sakız, Dağlıç White Karaman , Karayaka, Awassi, Red
Karaman and Tuj. The most peculiar indigenous goat breed of Türkiye is
basicaly Angora goat. Total Buffola population of Türkiye numbered
aproximatelys 310,000 head . The majority of buffoloes were concentrated in
middle Anotolia regions of Turkiye . Their number were highly decreas in
Türkiye as a results of decreased demand for the out put of Buffolaes.
Native sheep breeds ; Türkiye ranks after CIS, Australia, China, New
Zealand with respect to the number of sheep raised in the country. The prim=
ary
products are milk and meat.Wool is of also prima importance regarding beddi=
ng
and carpet making . Most of the breeds belong to the fat tailed carpet-wool
breeds. White Karaman in Central Anatolia, Red
Karaman to the East and short fat tailed Dağlıç to the Wes=
t.
Along the border to =
Syria
the Awassi is spread out. Due to the climatic conditions in the main parts =
of
the country , sheep production is the major income for the poor farmers. The
majority of the sheep population consist of. Native cattle breeds in
Türkiye; in Türkiye the cattle population is about 11 million head
according to 2000 statistics. The native cattle are predominantly of the Ea=
st
Anotolian red type in Eastern Anotolia, South Anotolian type in South East
Anotolian and Relatively small numbers in Mediterranean area, Grey cattle b=
reed
in Western Anotolia and European part of Türkiye A small number of Zag=

breed (another unimportant local native breed) are kept in some villages of=
Eastern Anotolia.

The speech signal is defined as a linear combination of Signature Base
Sequances. Signature Base Sequences generated from one, two and three-sound
syllables of the Turkish language. Similar syllables have been omitted by
tolerance of 10% for effective coding and then the number of syylables has =

[Gibberella fujikuroi], the causal agents of seed rot in maize in Turkey.
Experiments were conducted during 1989-91 and 1994 under field conditions, =
and
in 1992 and 1993 under controlled conditions (laboratory and plastic tunnel=
).
Maize cv. TTM-8119 was used as the material in all the years except in 1989
when FR-619 was used. In 1992 and 1993, the experiments were conducted in
rolled towels and in chests filled with soil and barnyard manure. Some of t=
he
chests were inoculated with F. moniliforme suspensions. Seeds were sown on
April and May under field conditions, and on March under controlled conditi=
ons.
The average soil temperatures in 1991 and 1994, and in the chest experiment
were 15.5, 13.0 and 11°C,
respectively. The variation in disease ratio between the control and treated
plots was not significant under field conditions. The control efficacy in t=
he
rolled towel test was 45-100%; only benomyl and carbendazim were not effect=
ive
among the fungicides. In the chest experiment, all the fungicides were
effective. Carbendazim resulted in 45-85 and 45-100% disease control in 1992
and 1993, respectively. Seed infection by F. moniliforme was not observed at
low temperatures. Under field conditions, seeds germinated without being
infected when sown early (April). The results suggested that thiram, captan,
maneb and mancozeb may be used as seed treatment against seed rot in maize.=

In
order to compansate these problems, outside and inside housing criteria has

these criteria, the amount of insulation in the structural elements and air
enterence and outlet 'openings for the ventilation have been quantified. In

Oslash; This study was conducted in the App=
lication
Farm of Tekirdag Agricultural Faculty in the years of 1997 and 1999, to
determine the effects of different irrigation methods and regimes on yield
components of apple trees. Irrigation water was applied with drip and surfa=
ce
(ponding) irrigation methods when 40 % and 70 % of available soil moisture =
was
consumed. As a result, it was found that applied irrigation water and measu=
red
seasonal evapotranspiration in drip irrigation plots were lower than those =
of
surf ace irrigation plots as 72.5 % and 62.7 %, respectively. Although yield
and quality parameters in the different treatments were not found to be
significant, drip irrigation method gave better results when this results,
irrigation water requirements, and evapotranspiration were evaluated togeth=
er.
In conclusion, it can be suggested that, drip irrigation method has to be
preferred for apple trees in Tekirdag conditions and irrigation water has t=
o be
applied when 40 % of available water holding capacity was consumed. =
