Delibas, L. (1994) Optimum time ratio for maximum application efficiency in furrow irrigation. Journal of Tekirdag Agricultural Faculty 3(1/2), pp. 217-223. [Turkish] [Tra= kya University, Turkey] [J. Tekirdag Agr. Fac.] [Prof. Dr. Lokman Delibas, Namik Kemal University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department = of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation] [CAB I] [C0] Abstract

Ø      Furrow length and water application time are the most important factors affecting the water applica= tion in furrow irrigation. It is established that when furrow length is shorter, surface runoff will increase; if furrows are longer, then deep percolation = loss will increase. This paper describes a mathematical model developed by using= the hydraulics of surface irrigation to determine the optimal ratio to prove maximum application efficiency in furrow irrigation. The ratio between the = time required for infiltration of net amount of water needed for root zone and t= he time when the water front reaches the end of the run (time ratio) plays an important role in determining the optimum furrow length to prove maximum irrigation efficiency. The analysis shows that the time ratio is a function= of infiltration characteristics of soil.

Tekirdag Ag= r. Fac.] [Prof. Dr. Lokman Delibas, Namik Kemal Univers= ity, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigatio= n] [CAB I] [C0] Abstract

Ø      Crop yield is related direc= tly to water use of the crops. Therefore, the amount of water in the soil and prov= ided by irrigation is a measure of crop yield. Production functions were develop= ed based on these relationships to estimate the yield as a function of irrigat= ion considering the physical conditions. The value of the parameters in these functions can be determined by considering crop factors, climate and soil conditions.

A stu= dy on the present status of livestock breeding in the area was conducted to investigate whether increased and/or improved mechanization would reduce production costs. 56 existing cattle rearing operations and 20 poultry farms were surveyed. The cattle farms were divided into 5 size groups according to the number of cattle in each (A=3D1-5 (average 3.7); B=3D6-10 (7.3); C=3D11= -15 (14); D=3D16-20 (18.8); E=3D>20 (40.1)). The percentage of land devoted to feed production was also calculated for each group (average 20.5%). The different types of tools and machinery currently used on these cattle and poultry rea= ring farms are tabulated with the numbers and percentages of farms using each ty= pe. The tables also give the projected numbers and percentages of farms which w= ould need to use each type of machine in order to increase their productivity.

Ø      This study was conducted in Anamur town and in some villages in Icel Province, Turkey, to evaluate the results of an analysis of groundnut marketing through cooperation, by using contingency tables for member-cooperative relations. Results showed positive relations between the income of members and land size, as well as between h= ired labour and land size. Relationships between the following variables were al= so found positive with 90% probability: age of members and their opinion about= the perceived success of the cooperative; education level of members and the pl= ace of product consignment; education level of members and their opinion about = the share of the cooperative in overall economic development; and agricultural income and regular consignments to the cooperative. Of the total land owned= by the members, 60% was their own property. Number of members between the ages= of 41-65 accounted for 63.33%. Members with secondary and higher education were small in number and accounted for 31.66%. Most (56.67%) of the respondents thought that their cooperative was unsuccessful, thus, 91.67% favours sustainance and intervention.

Ø      It is necessary to estimate= the genetic value of the animals accurately in order to improve the genetic constitution of the animals and to achieve selection goals. Selection progr= ess over a period of time is dependent on several factors, including generation interval. Generation interval may affect the amount of progress made in selection over a period of time. Decrease of the generation interval in all dairy cattle is dependent on the estimation of phenotypic value for milk production during the early stage rather than the last stage of lactation. = The possibilities of estimating the lactation yield by cumulative partial lacta= tion yields were investigated. The correlation coefficients, regression equations and ratio factors between the cumulative monthly yield and total lactation yield, as well as their errors and confidence intervals were calculated. The errors decreased with the increase of partial yield time. The reliability of estimations increased generally. The regression equation gave more signific= ant results compared to the ratio factors. It was concluded that the following regression equation could be used in estimating the total lactation yields = (Y) using the 180-day practical yields (X): Y=3D502.419+1.261x279.129.

Ø      The early fruit yield of greenhouse grown tomato cv. Texas F1 plants was highest with top-watered co= arse perlite medium (930 g/plant) and lowest with ring culture (350 g/plant). In fact, all 4 perlite regimes gave higher early yields than the other methods. Bags filled with soil-based compost and straw bales produced the lowest tot= al yields (1528 and 1791 g/plant, respectively). There was n.s.d. between the total yields from the other methods, which produced between 2456 and 2760 g/plant. The top-watered coarse perlite technique produced as good a yield = as the best conventional methods, without any fermentation or the need for ste= rilization, and also had the lowest labour requirement.

Ø      The composition and activit= y of gut microorganisms have important effects on the health and yield of farm animals. The control of microbial activities is one way to increase the productivity of animals. Like other feed additives, live microbial cultures have been used for many years in controlling the microbial fermentation pat= tern in the digestive tract. Among these cultures, live yeast culture is the most widely used for dairy cows to increase the digestive efficiency in the rume= n. However, results from several experiments are inconsistent, and more resear= ch is needed to determine the factors relating to the effectiveness of the yea= st culture in the field.

Aksoy, S.; Kaynak, E. (1993) Exploring international marketing management for fresh produce in the world: a potential issue for more busin= ess? Journal of International Food & Agribusiness Marketing 5 (2), pp. 93-109. [Safak Aksoy, Namik Kemal University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Economics] [= CAB I] [C0] abstract

Ø      Highlighting the gap betwee= n the theories of agricultural marketing and general marketing: that the former h= as developed with a policy orientation, whereas the latter with a business one, this article argues the necessity of a marketing management approach for international marketing of fresh produce. The empirical investigations incorporate excerpts of seven case studies on international marketing of fr= esh fruit and vegetables from Belgium, Chile, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and Turkey. Each case was investigated in terms of specific marketing management components, and a brief demonstration of product, price, distribution, and promotion concepts in modern marketing was made for fresh produce. It is concluded that international marketing of fresh produce thro= ugh the adoption of marketing management provides scope for academic contributi= ons as well as commercial practices.

Ø      The labour requirement, production cost and mechanization problems of rice-growing farms in Cukurova Region, Turkey, were determined. During production, the most important prob= lem was the sowing technique and harvesting, where hand broadcasting and swelli= ng with water instead of mixing the seeds did not cause homogenous germination= in almost all paddy production areas. Aside from the negative condition for production, the labour requirement is doubled. Hand sowing and harvesting w= as the most important factor affecting production cost and time consuming. The labor requirement for agricultural management in paddy production in this region is 29.83 i.c.h/day. Labour work is used in tillage (2.4%), sowing (21.6%), crop protection (2.8%), irrigation (17.9%), harvesting (43.1%), and threshing (3.64%). This situation shows that there is no use of mechanizati= on in rice production except for soil preparation.

Ø      To utilize germplasm resour= ces effectively in wheat breeding, it is first necessary to characterize and evaluate the genotypes for yielding capacity and yield components. Native a= nd exotic varieties and advanced lines of 203 bread wheat and 91 macaroni wheat genotypes were used as materials. Frequency distributions of spike grain yi= eld and yield components were estimated. Good enough variabilities for use of breeders were found in 203 bread wheat genotypes for yield components main = stem spike length, number of grains per spike and 1000-kernel weight. Coefficien= ts of skewness and kurtosis proved that frequency distributions of all charact= ers deviated from their normalities. Variation coefficients for 1000-kernel wei= ght and main stem length were below the highest limits of confidence. On the ot= her hand, a considerable amount of variabilities for use of breeders was found = in yield components main stem spike length, 1000-kernel weight and number of grains per spike of 91 macaroni wheat genotypes. Coefficients of skewness a= nd kurtosis proved that frequency distributions of all characters deviated from their normalities. Ø      The production of Roquefort cheese in Thrace, Turkey, was investigated. Several milk samples were obtai= ned from various cow breeds raised in the Thrace region. The sensory, physical, chemical and microbiological properties of the cheese were determined. The cheeses were ripened in an environment with 90-95% relative humidity and 8-9 deg C temperature for one month. Sensory analysis was conducted by a group = of panelists consisting of 5 people. The maximum and average sensory scores (perfect score was 100 points) were 78.83 and 81, respectively. The average= dry matter content of the samples was 60.6%. The results were parallel to that = of semi-hard cheese standards. The average humidity, mean acidity value and average salt content of the cheese were 3.94, 1.03 and 3.6%, respectively. = The results obtained were suitable for semi-hard cheese standards. The average = salt content in dry matter was 5.95%, and the average fat percentage of the samp= les was 20.5%. The average fat content in dry matter was 33.8%. This value was slightly lower than that of a similar kind of mould-ripened cheese. The ave= rage total nitrogen and protein percentages were 3.13 and 20%, respectively. The total live bacteria and coliform bacteria counts were 55x105 and 6.1x103 adet/g, respectively.

Ø      The genetic composition of = three different cattle genotypes with respect to transferrin (Tf) and some blood protein levels (albumin, globulin and total protein) was determined. Blood samples were obtained from 72 Boz Step [Turkish Grey Steppe], Holstein-Frie= sian and their crossbreds raised in Turkey. Three homozygous (TfAA, TfDD and TfD= 2D2) and 4 heterozygous (TfAD, TfAD2, TfBD and TfDD2) Tf types were observed. The most frequent Tf phenotype was TfAD (31.94%). No TfBB types were found. The highest Tf allele frequencies was TfD (4.445). The frequencies of the Tf A,= B and D2 alleles were 0.367, 0.016 and 0.172, respectively. The percentages of the homozygous and heterozygous Tf phenotypes were 42.19 and 58.81%, respectively. There were no significant differences among the subpopulations with regards to the distribution of the homozygous and heterozygous Tf type= s. The Hardy-Weinberg equation showed that there was no major deviation in the expected frequencies of the population. Total protein, albumin and globulin levels was 7.9+0.123, 3.4+0.059 and 4.46+0.121 g/dl, respectively. The differences in subpopulations with regards to total protein and albumin lev= els were significant (P<0.05 and 0.01), respectively. There was no significa= nt correlation among total protein, albumin and globulin averages of the homozygous and heterozygous Tf alleles.

Ø      This study was conducted to determine the haemoglobin (Hb) and transferrin (Tf) types in the Aciipayam sheep and to investigate if there was a correlation between these types and= the production properties of the sheep. The genetic structure of the herd with = respect to the number of alleles in question was also studied. Blood samples were t= aken from 201 ewes at first lactation stage. The following production records we= re used: dirty wool weight; 1st, 2nd and 3rd controls; milk production; and weaning weight. The serum samples and haemolysates were used to determine t= he Tf and Hb, respectively. Three Hb types were observed in the herd. The homozygous and heterozygous sheep had the Hb-BB and Hb-AB types. The most frequently detected Hb phenotype was Hb-BB. This phenotype constituted 82.5= 8% of the herd, whereas the Hb-AA phenotype was found at a low level (0.49%). Hb-Ab had a 1.69% rate in the herd. The gene frequency of the Hb-A allele w= as 0.0895, whereas that of the Hb-B allele was 0.9105. Using the Hardy-Weinber= g equation, no major deviation in the expected frequencies was observed. The difference= s in the control milk yield, wool weight and weaning weight averages between the groups were negligible. 16 types of Tf were found in the herd and 4 were homozygote Tf alleles (Tf-AB, Tf-AD, Tf-AM, Tf-AE, Tf-AS, Tf-BD, Tf-DE, Tf-= BM, Tf-BE, Tf-BS, Tf-MD and Tf-ME). Tf-AA was the most common phenotype among t= he homozygotes (11.4%). Tf-MM was the least common phenotype (0.99%). Among the heterozygote Tf alleles, the most common was Tf-Ab (20.8%), whereas the lea= st common ones were Tf-AS and Tf-ME (0.49%). The most common phenotypes were t= he heterozygous ones (70.12%). The homozygotes were common at a rate of 29.19%. Tf-A and Tf-S were the Tf alleles with the highest (0.35) and lowest gene frequencies, respectively. No major deviation from the expected frequencies= was observed as a result of the chi-square test done on the phenotypes.

The neck and legs had a darker coat colour than the other parts of the body. The withers height of Grey cattle from the Enez and Ipsa= la regions was 118.195 plus or minus 0.531 cm. The maximum and minimum heights= of withers were 122.5 plus or minus 1.849 and 117.5 plus or minus 1.215 cm, respecti= vely. The average hip height of the Enez-Ipsala groups was 123.452 plus or minus = 0.507 cm. The real= and relative body measurements of the groups were also obtained. The relative withers height according to the body length was 83.70% in the Enez-Ipsala groups. The lowest value was obtained from the Pasakoy data. The results we= re visualized by histograms. The statistical significance of the differences a= mong the groups were tested by t-test. The differences among the Enez-Ipsala subgroup's averages were insignificant. The differences in the average hip = bone width between the Enez and Ipsala groups were insignificant. The significan= ce of the differences in the body measurements of the cattle was investigated.=

Ø      A total of 108 individual production and reproduction record charts of cows raised in the Inanh State farm, Tekirdag, Turkey, were used in this study. The highest and lowest (2728.69 plus or minus 217.93) lactation yields were observed during the lactation period that started in July and August, respectively. The differe= nce in the 305-days lactation yield that started during several months were significant. The average 305-days milk yield and lactation period were 3142.95 litres and 275.11 days, respectively. The highest and lowest 305-days milk yields were obtained in 1986 and 1981, with values of 3594.31 plus or minus 111.92 and 2463.81 plus or minus 130.87 litres, respectively. The differences in the 305-days milk yields obtained in several years were significant. The longest and shortest lactation period lengths (296.63 plus or minus 10.02 and 234.79 pl= us or minus 11.11 days, respectively) was observed in 1987 and 1989, respectiv= ely. The highest lactation yield was obtained at the 4th lactation. The average = age at first calving, calving interval and period of days open were 968.04, 450= and 124.95 days, respectively. The average gestation and dry period lengths were 274.46 and 101 days, respectively. Analysis of variance was conducted to determine the significance of the source of variation. The following source= s of variation were significant: age; year; and starting months of the 305-days lactation yield. The average milk yield per day grouped by age and months of control record were also important sources of variation. The differences in= the age at first calving and number of insemination per conception grouped by y= ear and number of gestation were significant. Calving interval, length of dry period, period of open days, average number of insemination per conception = and gestation length were insignificant sources of variation. The following were insignificant: calving interval differences among the number of lactation; length of dry period differences among years and number of lactation, lengt= h of open days period, differences among the years and number of lactation, numb= er of insemination per conception differences among the years; and length of gestation differences among the sexes of calves born and number of lactatio= n.

Ø      This study was carried out = to determine the use of separated sex feeding in broiler chickens. 250 Starbro chicks aged one day were used in this study and separated by sex. The male = and female chicks were randomly allotted into 12 experimental units. The male a= nd female groups differed significantly in weight gain, feed consumption, cumulative feed consumption and weekly and cumulative feed conversion value= s. The daily feed consumption values in the male group during the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th weeks were 121, 128, 142 and 163 g, respectively. The values in the fe= male group were 108, 116, 130 and 145 g, respectively. The liveweight values during the 5t= h, 6th, 7th and 8th weeks in the male group were 1468, 1903, 2333 and 2774 g, respectively= . The respective values in the female group were 1327, 1665, 2015 and 2340 g. The cumulati= ve feed conversion values in the male group during the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th weeks = were 1.66, 1.77, 1.85 and 1.97, respectively. The values in the female group were 1.70, 1.85, 1.99 and 2.14, respectively. The results indicated that male and female broilers showed different growth characteristics. Thus, male and fem= ale broilers should be fed separately.

Ø  &n= bsp;   The yield and yield components of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) hybrid varieties were evaluated at Thrace Agricultural Research Institute, EDIRNE, Turkey, in 1991 and 1992. The hybrids used were the semidwarf hybrids Sunbred-265 (120 cm) and DO-855 (127 cm), Trakya-259 (140 cm; standard height), and tall hybrid Tordillo (160 cm). The hybrids= were grown under high (4762 plants/da; 70x30 cm) or low (3571 plants/da; 70x40 c= m) plant population. The mean values of seed yield, yield components, and phenological and quality characteristics at the budding, flowering and physiological maturity stages (plant height, head diameter, stem diameter, number of leaves, seed yield/da, seed yield per head, number of seeds per h= ead, volume weight, 1000-seed weight, husk ratio, oil content and oil yield/da) = were analysed using ANOVA. Correlation coefficients were calculated for each character. For the semidwarf hybrid varieties, the high plant population was more suitable for high seed yield and oil yield per decare. However, for the tall hybrid variety and hybrid variety of standard height, the normal plant population was more suitable for high seed yield and oil yield per decare.<= o:p>

Ø      In this study, the effects of proteolysis, lipol= ysis and oxidation, as well as titratable acidity, on the changes of flavour and aroma in set and strained yoghurts during storage were investigated, and the following results were obtained. Flavour and aroma defects became pronounce= d on the 30th day of storage in the set yoghurts. Over the same period, titratab= le acidity, acid degree and tyrosine values were determined to be 1.306% (58 d= eg SH), 0.156 mg KOH/g product and 0.144 mg/g resp. In the strained yoghurts, titratable acidity, acid degree and tyrosine values were found to be 2.559% (113.7 deg SH), 1.271 mg KOH/g product and 0.217 mg/g resp. on the 45th day= of storage, at which time flavour-aroma defects appeared. Since the peroxide v= alue of the set and strained yoghurts decreased with the storage period, determination of the rejection level for the flavour and aroma defects was = not possible. The results of path analyses showed that the coeff. of determinat= ion of all factors responsible for the changes in flavour-aroma were 0.8831 and 0.9035 for set and strained yoghurt resp. The changes in flavour and aroma = were best characterized by tyrosine and acid degree values in set, and by peroxi= de and acid degree values in strained yoghurts when each factor was considered independently.

Ø      A system of organic agricul= ture is proposed and discussed with reference to soil cultivation, use of organic fertilizers, crop rotation, pest and weed control, and energy outlay. The system depends on 3 basic principles: reliance on nitrogen-fixing bacteria instead of chemical fertilizers; maintenance of a loose and crumbly soil texture with a cultivation depth not exceeding 20-30 cm; and avoidance = of chemical pesticides and herbicides. Organic manures should be applied at the rate of 10-15 m3 per ha. This farming system does not harm the environment and the quality of the crops is much improved.

Ø      This research was carried o= ut to obtain grafted-rooted young vines in the greenhouse using plastic tubes. In this research, one grape cultivar (Alfons) and three rootstocks (44-53, 5BB= and SO4) were used. Rootstock cuttings were directly planted in the plastic tub= es and grafted with omega pliers after bud-burst and when the shoot of cutting were 5-10 cm. The highest percentage of graft take was obtained for the graft combination= of "Alfons/44-53" was 42,29%, but for "Alfons/SO4" this was 29,14% and for "Alfons/5BB" this was 23,34%. Considering the first grade grafted vine, the highest value appeared in "Alfons/44-53" (33,46%). This was followed by Alfons/SO4 (18, 49%) and Alfons/5BB (12,95%)= .

Ø      A study was conducted in Si= livri (Turkey) to investigate the causal agents of tomato diseases when plants we= re grown intensively. Fungal agents were examined in the laboratory while viral agents were examined by inoculation of indicator plants. The following pathogens were identified: Fusarium acuminatum [Gibberella acuminata], F. equiseti, F. oxysporum, Alternaria sp., Rhizoctonia solani, tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and stolbur. Stolbur disease was the most prevalent and caused = high crop loss. TMV was the second most important disease. The intensity of this disease was affected by vector activity, seed cleanliness and contact with other plants.

Ø      The growth and yield of cuc= umber cv. Gamara F1 grown in glasshouse border, bags, rings, straw bales, and top- and bottom-watered perlite was investigated in 1991 during the spring growing period. The highest early yield was obtained from plants grown in bottom-watered perlite, but the highest total yield was obtained from the r= ing cultivation. Due to the necessity of medium sterilization for the border, b= ags and ring culture; the difficulty of fermentation for the straw bale culture; and the high labour requirements of the other methods, perlite bag culture = was the optimum method for greenhouse cultivation in the country.

Ø      This study was conducted in= two provinces in Turkey (Adana and Mersin), during 1990-91, to: determine the amount of and reason for time lost in four packhouses carrying out citrus a= nd apple processing; and calculate their effect on production costs. Results showed that the monetary value of time losses in the first packhouse was 63= 251 754 LT, while additional unit cost was 34.9 LT per kg. Due to short working period and lower production capacity, the second packhouse had a 24 878 790= LT extra cost and 34.9 LT unit cost per kg, which accounted for the lost time.= In the third packhouse, these values were calculated as 37 646 257 LT and 15.7= LT per kg, respectively. The values obtained at the fourth packhouse were 128 = 401 450 LT and 17.5 LT per kg, which was accounted for longer production season= and higher production output compared to other packhouses. Based on the results= , it is suggested that the poor concentration of labourers after break time lead= to the decrease in production and quality, and the increase in unit costs and delays in orders. Thus, managers of packhouses should continuously evaluate their activities along the production period, and should also carry out detailed research to prevent or reduce time losses.

Ø      Forty-four soil clays and f= our reference phyllosilicate clays were used to establish qualitative and quantitative relationships between clay mineral characteristics and K fixat= ion. The soil clays were obtained from Vertisols, Vertic Mollisols, Haploxerolls, Xerochrepts, and a Palexeralf, from three semiarid regions of northwestern Morocco. The soil clays contained beidellite, montmorillonite, vermiculite,= and illite in widely varied abundances. Both total and tetrahedral cation-excha= nge capacity (CEC) were measured. Octahedral CEC was calculated by difference. Tetrahedral CEC was determined after saturation with Li and heating at 300 = deg C to reduce octahedral charge to near zero. Potassium fixation was determin= ed in both wet (1:4 soil/solution, 16 h on a shaker) and dry conditions (after drying for 24 h at 70 deg C) using three different levels of added K. Total= CEC was well correlated with tetrahedral CEC (r2=3D0.76, P<0.001). Approxima= tely half of the smectitic and vermiculitic soil clays have >50% of their tot= al charge due to tetrahedral charge. The amount of K fixed increased with adde= d K, whereas the percent K fixed relative to total added K decreased. The K fixa= tion by the clays studied was best correlated with total CEC for a given amount = of K added. It was also well correlated with tetrahedral CEC. Simple regression analysis did not show any significant effect of octahedral CEC. A multiple regression analysis, however, demonstrated that both components of total CE= C, tetrahedral and octahedral, have a simultaneous effect on K fixation. Tetrahedral CEC explained more of the variation (64%) than octahedral CEC (36%). This greater effect was attributed mainly to the proximity of tetrahedral charge to the interlayer space of 2:1 phyllosilicate clays.

Ø      As a result of using artifi= cial insemination in cattle, the occurrence of mating of cows with different bul= ls during 2 consecutive heat periods has increased, which in turn result to ca= ses of uncertain parentage. There is a demand for solving parentage test proble= ms. It is necessary for any character used in parentage tests to be an inherited trait and be determined at birth or shortly after birth. The variation exis= ting in cattle with respect to blood groups and characters related to them make parentage tests successful. The theoretical principles used in parentage te= sts are summarized in this paper. Moreover, application of these tests in pract= ice is discussed.

Ø      This study was undertaken to obtain regression equations in order to estimate the liveweight and carcass weight of cattle by utilizing some body measurements. The measurements were taken for 7 parts of the body. The cattle included in this study were of different ages, sexes and genotypes. The relationship was determined by sin= gle and multiregression equations and coefficients. The relationship between bo= dy measurements and liveweight was stronger than that between body measurement= s and carcass weight. The relationships varied according to genotypes. The highest coefficient of determination was obtained for the chest girth-liveweight relationship (R2=3D0.886). The lowest coefficient of determination was obta= ined for the shoulder height-liveweight (R2=3D0.597) relationship. The highest a= nd lowest coefficients of determination in relation to carcass weight were obtained for chest girth (R2=3D0.428) and shoulder height (R2=3D0.283), respectively. The equations with only one independent variable for chest gi= rth were sufficient for estimating the liveweight. Compared with multiregression equations for estimating carcass weight, it was necessary to use 2 independ= ent variables (chest girth and other measurements). The equations obtained for several ages, genotypes and sexes were also statistically compared.

Ø      This study was conducted to determine the effects of vegetable oil (sunflower) supplementation at 0, 3 = and 6% levels on the performance of commercial brown egg layers. 2864 Welp Line layers aged 58 weeks were used in this study. Each of the 3 treatments were allotted into 4 replications (235 layers). Replications consisted of cage units. At the end of the experiment, the 0 (control), 3 and 6% groups consu= med 115, 109 and 103 g feeds, respectively. The feed conversion ratios were 3.27, 2.96 and 2.75, respectively. The feed consumption and feed conversion were significantly different (P<0.05) among treatments. Hen-day egg production values and average egg weights of the control, 3 and 6% groups were 61.0, 63.3 and 64.= 0% and 57.7, 58.5 and 59= .3 g, respectively. The egg production and egg weight were significantly different between experimental groups (P<0.05). Laying performance was improved in terms of feed consumption, feed conversion, egg production and egg weight b= y addition of vegetable oil to layer feeds.

Ø      This study was conducted to determine the effect of fat and protein concentrations on broiler performan= ce. Six rations with 3 different levels of energy and protein were prepared. A = 3x2 factorial design was used. Four experiments were carried out. 240 broiler chickens were included in this study. The feeds containing 2 types of fat a= nd 3 types of food product were given to chickens ad libitum throughout the experimental period. Insignificant differences were observed in carcass composition and quality between groups. On the 45th day, the carcass weight= in the interior fat group was 1602 g. On the other hand, the average carcass weight in groups fed with acid fat was 1642 g. The productivity of the interior fat group was 80= .5%, whereas that of the acid fat group was 78.9%. Differences in feed consumpti= on and liveweight were insignificant between groups. No major differences in t= he effects of interior fat and acid fat on carcass quality were observed. Moreover, the ratio of energy to protein was constant, and no differences between rations with varied levels of feed product density were observed.

Ø      Butter is a milk product wh= ich is obtained after processing of cream, milk or yoghurt with proper methods and equipment. It consists of only the original components of milk and has a characteristic taste, flavour and structure which is not available in other dairy products. Butter is important and necessary for human nutrition. Beca= use of short chain fatty acids and melting feature at the room temperature, it = is easily digested than other fats. Due to it is rich vitamin content, particularly fat soluble vitamins, it cannot be eliminated from the daily d= iet. Besides fatty acids and vitamins, butter is also an important energy source= for the human body.

Ø      This experiment was carried= out in 1990-91 in the Experiment and Research Field of the Agricultural Faculty of Tekirdag (Turkey). In this experiment, 4 cultivars, (Erzurum L-147, Yesilkoy I-200, Urem-79, Sari Elci) and 5 cultivar candidates (22,24,25,26,27) were sown as winter crops. Agricultural characters and their correlations were investiga= ted. It can be said the candidates 24 and 25 which showed a similar performance = with the cultivars, beside some important agricultural characters like plant hei= ght, number of shoots, 1000-grain weight and also green fodder and grain yield. = It can be suggested that these may adapt to Tekirdag conditions, but it is use= ful to continue the experiment for several years.

Ø      A study was conducted in Ya= zir village, 20 kg away from Tekirdag (Turkey), to investigate the symptoms of B deficiency in sugarbeet and to evaluate the effects of different levels of B fertilizer (Tikal) on the performance of the crop. B was supplied as a soil applicatio= n at 1, 2 and 3 kg/ha; and as foliar application at 25, 50 and 100 g/ha. B application as soil and foliar treatments increased sugarbeet yield, quality and yield components compared to the control. Boron application also increa= sed the sugar content, and the highest values were obtained under 2 kg B/ha. Yield was h= ighest at 3 kg B/ha.
