Ø      Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ED= TA) is persistent in the environment. The presence of EDTA in soil may alter the mobility and transport of Zn, Cd, and Ni in soils because of the formation = of water soluble chelates, thus increasing the potential for metal pollution of natural waters. Mobility of metals is related to their extractability. To investigate metal extractability affected by EDTA, Zn, Cd, and Ni were adde= d to vertisol and alluvial soils at rates of 50, 2, and 5 mg/kg, respectively. B= oth natural and metal amended soils were treated with Na[2]EDTA at rates of 0, = 0.2, and 0.5 mg/kg. After five months of incubation, soil samples were extracted with 0.1 N HCl, 0.00= 5 M DTPA + 0.01 M CaCl[2] + 0.1 M TEA (0.005 M diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid + 0.01 M calcium chloride + 0.1 M triethanolamine= ), and 1 M Mg(NO[3])[2], the l= atter of which extracts the exchangeable form of metals (Zn, Cd, and Ni). According = to experimental results, Zn, Cd, and Ni in all extractions increased with increasing rates of EDTA in the natural and metal amended soils.=

Ø      This research was carried out in or= der to determine the most suitable method for chemical extraction of available zinc (Zn) content of paddy soils. Paddy soil samples from twelve regions were collected and each sample was further divided into four pots each of which = was allocated to one of the four Zn doses. Therefore a total of 45 samples were evaluated after growing maize as the test plant. It was determined that Zn uptake, dry matter amount and Zn content of the plants increased with the application of increasing Zn rates to the pots. Nine chemical extraction methods for available Zn contents of soils were used and the reliability of= the investigated methods was ranked as: 0.005 M DTPA + 0.01 M CaCl2 + 0.1 M TEA; 0.005 M DTPA + 1 M NH4HCO3; 0.01 M Na2 EDTA + 1 M (NH4)2CO3; 0.01 M Na2 EDTA + 1 M NH4 OAc; 0.01 M Na2 EDTA; 1 M NH4OAc; 1 M MgCl2; 0.05 M HCl + 0.012 M H2SO4; 0.01 M Hidrocinon. T= he method for extraction with 0.005 M DTPA + 0.01 M CaCl2 + 0.1 M TEA solution had the highest correlation coefficie= nt with and also enabled the determination of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and co= pper (Cu). It could be recommended as the most suitable one for the investigated soils.

[C1 OC1] Abstract.

Ø      Dietary fat continues to be a major research priority because of its association with heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases. On the other hand emerging data suggest that trans fatty acids may raise blood levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol to much the same extent as saturated fatty acids. In this research cis and tra= ns fatty acid composition of unfermented and fermented corn bread as well as f= lour used in the recipe, and dough samples were determined. Unfermented bread samples were made of corn flour, and fermented breads were made of corn flour-wheat flour mix (1/1) by the traditional straight dough method. Sampl= es, including flour, dough and bread, were analysed by capillary gas-liquid chromatography for their fatty acid compositions. According to the results obtained, unfermented and fermented bread dough have the same fatty acid composition as the flour used in the recipe. Dough fermentation did not eff= ect the fatty acid composition of corn bread. However, fatty acid composition changed slightly in the baked bread. The levels of palmitic, stearic and ol= eic acid increased, and those of linoleic, linolenic, arachidic and eicosenoic acids decreased, compared to flour and dough. Trans linolenic acid was also detected in both unfermented and fermented corn bread at a level of 0.1%. Slight changes in the fatty acid composition and formation of trans linolen= ic acid were a result of baking temperature.

Ø      Nowadays, the most common character= istic of all regulations and buildings is that heat energy requirement of a building= is calculated and evaluated for the whole building, not as a sum of those for individual building components. In this paper, first, the recently revised Turkish standard is described in general, and then compared with the ISO 91= 64. EN 832 and the German regulation. The calculation procedures presented in t= he standards are evaluated, based on the results of three different types of buildings. The new TS 825 is an application of ISO 9164 in every respe= ct, It uses the same equation, same restriction and same flexibility. EN 832 is basically similar to the ISO 9164 and so is the new TS 825. The most import= ant difference in EN 832 is that solar energy gain is calculated in quite detail including passive solar gains, as well as direct solar gains. This approach gives more accurate results but need huge and detailed database. German regulation is harmonious with ISO 9164, EN 832 and TS 825 only from the poi= nt of view of principles and concepts. However, it is a very simplified one. t= he calculation method defined in the German regulation gave Q(year) far from t= he actual heating energy requirement of buildings for the countries with moder= ate climate. The main differences between the calculation methods presented in = the standards are "the acceptance of climatic data," "the calculation method of internal heat gains," "the calculation meth= od of solar heat gains" and "the acceptance of the air change rate values." The effects of parameters and the building types on the energy demands are discussed in order to determine which parameter should be const= ant but which ones should be variable, to obtain more simple but accurate resul= ts, and to show to designers the parameters to be effectively controlled to decrease the energy requirements of the buildings. Independently of building type, the higher the area of component, the more influential is its U-value= on the Q(year) except ground. Ground has always the least effect on the Q(year= ). The effect of air change rate is high being almost similar for all types of buildings, however air change rate affects Q(year) slightly less at the terraced office building than the others. With lower U-values of wall and window, the effects of window area and window directions on the Q(year) of detached buildings are minimized. Terraced buildings are more sensitive to window area than the window directions. It is clear that the increase in so= uth window area, for all types of buildings, has slightly more effect on Q(year) than the increase in north. east and west window areas. The effects of r an= d g on the Q(year) increase, when the heat loss decreases but solar gain increa= ses. Therefore, for modem buildings, to accept these parameters as a constant is= not fairly significant.

Ø      The main objective of this study co= nducted in Turkey in 1998 and 1999, was to ascertain the correct irrigation scheduling of watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) under adequate soil water supply during who= le growing season, and under limited soil water supply at different seasonal combinations. The yield and the yield components, the sensitive periods to = soil water deficits and the yield response factors were determined under the condition of which 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of water requirement was supplied during the whole growing season and also during individual growing periods, namely, early vegetative growth, late vegetative growth, total vegetative growth, flowering and fruit growth. The highest fruit yield was obtained fr= om the plots where irrigation water was adequately applied during the total growing season. Flowering was the most sensitive period to water deficits. = The yield response factors (ky) which relates relative yield decrease to relati= ve evapotranspiration deficit were found to be 1.27 for the whole growing seas= on and 0.68, 0.63, 0.50, 0.47, 0.29 for flowering, fruit growth, late vegetati= ve, total vegetative, early vegetative periods, respectively.

Ø      The objective of this research was = to determine chemical composition and hygienic quality of the doner kebabs sol= d in the Tekirdag market. In the chemical analysis; pH, moisture, protein, fat a= nd salt contents as well as some minerals, Na, K, Zn, Fe and Cu, were determin= ed. The samples were examined for aerobic plate count (APC), psychrotrophic bacteria, coliforms, mould and yeast, Clostridium perfringens and Salmonella spp. to observe the hygienic quality of the doner samples. The results of chemical analysis showed 5.86–6.03 pH, 61.28–51.67% moisture, 1= 9.04–26.45% protein, 16.23–14.03% fat, 1.94–3.01% ash, and 1.28–2.08% salt values for the raw-cooked doner kebabs respectively. Chicken doner keb= abs had higher pH, percentage protein and Cu content compared to beef doners wh= ile they had lower values for the percentage salt, Na, Zn, and Fe contents. The microbiological analysis showed 5.68–4.92 cfu/g APC, 5.14-3.48 cfu/g psychrotrophic bacteria, 4.79–2.88 cfu/g coliforms and 4.96–3.55 cfu/g mould and yeast for the raw-cooked doner kebab samples respectively. = In general, chicken doner kebabs had higher APC, psychrotrophic bacteria and coliform counts than the beef doners. Although all of the raw kebabs contai= ned presumptive Salmonella spp., 80% of the cooked chicken and 40% of the cooked beef samples also had these pathogens presumptively. Also, 80% of the raw doners, 60% of cooked chicken and 40% of beef samples contained C. perfring= ens. In conclusion, it could be proposed from the above data that the doner keba= bs sold in Tekirdag market had very low hygienic quality; therefore, they would have a potential hazard for public health.

Ø      Methods available to measure salini= ty and moisture content in arid and semi-arid regions are limited because of the h= igh salinities and very wide range of water contents (i.e. from saturation near= the water table to air dry in the evaporation front). This paper is focused on = the instrumentation employed in monitoring salt and moisture profiles in a colu= mn study which has wide applicability in salinity research. Experiments were conducted in a specially designed evaporation chamber which provided high evaporative demand as experienced in arid and semi-arid regions. Intensively instrumented soil columns with a constant shallow saline water table were u= sed. Moisture content was measured by thermal conductivity and salinity by 4-electrode probe. In each case, insruments were manufactured specifically = for the purpose in order to provide the desired degree of spatial resolution. T= wo soil types, sandy loam and clay loam, were used. Results indicated that thermal-conductivity probes measured water content over a wide range from saturation to 0.16 m<= /st1:metricconverter>(3)/m(3) for clay loam and to = 0.09 m(3)/m(3) for sandy loam soil with great sensitivity (R-2 > 0.95) and were unaffec= ted by salt accumulation. The 4-electrode probes provided reliable measurements (R-2 > 0.95) of the salinity of the soil solution for the range relevant= to agricultural application. However, the accuracy of the probe decreased with= the decreases in the water content after permanent wilting point.

Ø      The development, Survivorship, and reproduction of rose aphid, Macrosiphum rosae (L.), were evaluated at four constant temperatures (17.5, 20, 22.5, and 25 degreesC). The developmental = periods of immature stages ranged from 10.7 d at 17.5 degreesC to 7.95 d at 25 degreesC. The total percentages of survivorship of immature stages varied f= rom 52.06 and 86% within the temperature range of 17.5-25 degreesC. However, the total percentages of survivorships were reduced to 52.06 and 54% at 17.5 and 25, respectively. The average longevity of adult females was 13.92, 10.74, 18.55, and 8.65 d at 17.5, 20, 22.5, and 25 degreesC) respectively. The ave= rage progeny per female was 19.75, 13.28, 34.92, and 7.23 at 17.5, 20, 22.5, and= 25 degreesC, respectively. The largest r(m) (0.170865) occurred at 22.5 degree= sC. The optimal temperature for M rosae population growth was 22.5 degreesC.

Ø  &n= bsp;   This study was conducted to determine the suitabil= ity of a crop water stress index (CWSI) to schedule irrigation for watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris) grown with trickle irrigation. The effects of five irrigation levels (100, 75, 50, 25 and 0% replenishment of soil water deple= ted from 0.90 m soil profile depth) on watermelon yields and resulting CWSI were investigat= ed. The highest yield and water use was obtained under fully irrigated conditio= ns (100% replenishment of soil water depleted) in 2 years. The CWSI was calcul= ated from measurements of infrared canopy temperatures, ambient air temperatures= and vapor pressure deficit values for five irrigation levels. The trends in CWSI values were consistent with the soil water contents induced by the deficit irrigations. Unlike the yield, CWSI increased with increased soil water deficit. An average CWSI of about 0.41 before irrigation produced the maxim= um yield. The yield was directly correlated with mean CWSI values and the line= ar equation ‘Y=3D91.143−66.077 CWSI’ can be used for yield prediction. The CWSI value was useful for evaluating crop water stress in watermelon and should be useful for timing irrigation and predicting yield.=

Ø      The ability of two Fusarium oxyspor= um f. sp. cepae isolates, FOC6 and FOC8, to colonize onion seedlings, following s= eed inoculation of different cultivars, and the associated quantitative and qualitative polygalacturonase and pectin lyase production were analysed. Al= lium cepa 'Akgun 12' and 'Rossa Savonese' were shown to be resistant to both isolates. FOC6 and = FOC8 differed in pectolytic enzyme production, isoenzyme patterns, and aggressiveness. The pectolytic enzyme production from FOC6 was generally lo= wer than that of the more aggressive FOC8 isolate. Polygalacturonase activity w= as correlated with the disease development upon infection with FOC8. Germinati= ng seeds of onion cultivars inoculated with both FOC6 and FOC8 were extracted = and fractionated by thin-layer chromatography to determine their content of antifungal compounds. Extracts from resistant cultivars were characterized = by the expression of peculiar antifungal fractions, which may be involved in resistance to the pathogen. Results from the present study suggest that, for each cultivar-isolate interaction, the disease severity during onion colonization by E oxysporum f. sp. cepae is the result of concomitant facto= rs including: (i) the ability of F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae to produce different amounts of pectolytic enzymes, (ii) the production of distinctive pectolytic isoenzyme patterns, and (iii) the expression of distinct antifungal compoun= ds.

Ø      The contents of total trans FA = of sunflower oils at different stages of refining processes were determined by capillary GLC. The contents of 18∶1, 18∶2, and 18∶3 trans acids were 0.22±0.03, 2.31±0.23, and 0.03±0.01%, respectively, in physically refined sunflower oils, and 0.05±0.01, 0= .69±0.26, and 0.02±0.01%, respectively, in chemically refined sunflower oils. = The total trans FA contents drastically increased at the end of the physical refining process. The total trans FA contents of chemically refined sunflow= er oils were <1%. Because of the high temperature applied in the last stage= of physical refining, the content of total trans FA was higher than in chemica= lly refined sunflower oils. The last-stage conditions should be carefully evalu= ated to reduce the formation of trans FA during physical refining.

Ø      The primary aim of this study was to investigate the bond strength between reinforcement and concrete. Large siz= ed nine beams, which were produced from concrete with approximately f(c)(')=3D= 30 MPa, were tested. Each beam was designed to include two bars in tension, spliced at the center of the span. The splice length was selected so that b= ars would fail in bond, splitting the concrete cover in the splice region, befo= re reaching the yield point. In all experiments, the variable used was the reinforcing bar diameter. In the experiments, beam specimens were loaded in positive bending with the splice in a constant moment region. In consequenc= e, as the bar diameter increased, bond strength and ductility reduced but, however, the stiffnesses of the beams (resistance to deflection) increased. Morever, a empirical equation was obtained to calculate the bond strength of reinforcement and this equation was compared with Orangun et al. (1977) and Esfahani and Rangan (1998). There was a good agreement between the values computed from the predictive equation and those computed from equations of Orangun et al. (1977) and Esfahani and Rangan (1998).

Ø      Oat bran was used as a fat substitu= te in the production of meatballs. The effect of oat bran addition on the fatty a= cid composition, trans fatty acids, total fat, some physicochemical and sensory properties of the samples was studied. Meatballs were produced with four different formulations; the addition of 5, 10, 15 and 20% oat bran. Control samples were formulated with 25% fat addition as in commercial production. = The major fatty acids were cis-oleic, palmitic and stearic acid in all the meat= ball samples, those with oat bran added as well as the control. Meatballs contai= ning oat bran had lower concentrations of total fat and total trans fatty acids = than the control samples. Meatballs made with 20% oat bran had the highest prote= in, salt and ash contents, L value (lightness), b value (yellowness), and the lowest moisture content and a value (redness). There was no significant difference among the meatball samples with respect to sensory properties, a= nd all samples had high acceptability.

Ø      The contents of available Fe, Cu, Z= n and Mn of acid soils for plants were investigated. With this aim, 23 soil samples = were collected from the depth of 0 - 20 cm in The Eastern Black Sea and Thrace regions. The differenc= es betwen the results were due to the differences between the characteristics = of these regions. While the levels of Fe, Mn and Cu contents of The Eastern Bl= ack Sea Region acid soils were found to be higher, the content of Zn was usually insufficient. In the Thrace Region, only the content of Mn was found to be sufficient; Zn, Cu and in some soils Fe deficiency were obtained. One of the reasons why the result of analysis in these regions were different from each other is due to the differences in farming practices. The available Fe, Cu,= Zn and Mn contents of the soils were between 1.88 - 43.60; 1.92 - 8.60; 0.00 -= 1.10 and 2.36 - 62.19 mg kg - 1 for The Eastern Black Sea Region and 0.32 - 5.62; 0.02 - 0.79; 0.02 - 0.60 and 13.80 - 44.62 mg kg - 1 for Thrace Region, respectively. In addition, statistics show some significant relationships between some soil properties and Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn contents of the soils wh= ich were investigated.

&= Oslash;      Purposes of this research as to det= ermine cooling effect of Freon 12 (R12) and R404 A in a cold store built specifica= lly for this research. Inlet and outlet temperature of the evaporator and condenser, compressor suction and compression pressures were measured and cooling coefficients were calculated. Required flow rate of R12 quite larger than that of R404 A because of its less evaporative specific heat. High flow rate increases compression work and consequently compressor will use more energy. Used energy per unit cooling of R12 was higher than R404 A. Capacit= y of condenser for R12 refrigerant was too much in spite of small cooling load. Evaporator pressure of R404 A was higher than R12. This caused to increase = the vapour density and to establish more cooling effect. Suction and compression pressures of the R404 A were higher than Freon 12. High suction and compres= sion pressure decrease compressor life. Cooling effect of system showed superior= ity of R404 A.

Ø      Effects of seed treatments of primi= ng, soaking and hydration-dehydration on emergence and seedling growth of fresh-market and processing tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cvs H 2= 274 and Rio Grande) were evaluated under stress conditions of low temperature, drought and salinity. Seed treatment × stress condition interaction was not significant for all of the criteria tested. For both cultivars, while the s= eed treatments did not result in significant increases on emergence percentage compared with untreated seeds, the treated seeds on the other hand emerged faster and were greater in seedling length, fresh weight, and diameter comp= ared to non-treated seeds. The results indicated that the seed pretreatments tes= ted may be an alternative of choice to improve emergence and seedling growth, a= nd stress factors can be exploited in the manipulation of seedling development= .

Ø      In February 2003, a severe dise= ase with bacterial leaf necrosis symptoms was observed on container-grown melon (Cuc= umis melo cv. Nun) seedlings at a nursery in Adana, eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. A number of water-soaked lesions were first observed on the undersides of t= he cotyledons. Small, dark brown and angular leaf spots were subsequently obse= rved on the true leaves at later stages of the disease. A fluorescent, opaque, semifluid, Gram-negative bacterium was isolated from infected tissues on Ki= ng's medium B. Strains isolated were aerobic, rod-shaped, Gram-negative, oxidase- and arginine dihydrolase [arginine deiminase]-negative, and catalase- and pectolytic-positive. Fatty acid analysis identified the strains as Pseudomo= nas viridiflava, with similarity indices ranging from 58 to 89%. Upon conducting pathogenicity tests, the bacterium was reisolated from the inoculated plant= s. This is thought to be the first report of P. viridiflava causing bacterial = leaf spot and necrosis on melon in Turkey.

&= Oslash;      The purpose of this paper is to exa= mine the marketing structure of milk processors, factors influencing production andproblems faced by firms following recent economic conditions in the Trak= ya region. Dairy cattle production is more developed in theresearch area than = in other regions. In addition, the region has played an important role with its high milk processing capacity. Theresearch results indicate that the dairy industry has important problems, such as an insufficient and low quality mi= lk supply, andpoor hygiene and marketing. In particular, a large number of small-and medium-sized milk processors face extensive hygiene andmarketing problems. The other problems in the milk sector are an insufficient cold ch= ain, high production costs and bureaucracy.Although firms do not regard the abse= nce of a cold chain as an important factor, it is a major problem and obstacle = to theimprovement of the milk sector. Factors affecting production and dairy f= irms were analyzed by the multidimensional scaling (MDS)method. The MDS analysis results indicate that total market demand and dairy product prices are major factors affecting productiondecisions. Another MDS result reveals that the dairy industry faces two serious problems: milk quality and marketing<= /o:p>

Ø      Haploid induction potentials in Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (2n=3D2x=3D24) via unilateral pollination with Solanum sisymbriifolium Lam. (2n=3D2x=3D24) pollen were investigated. In Ap= ril, the cv. Invictus set 12 fruits out of 72 pollinations and, the remaining six cultivars did not set fruit. Whereas in May, from a total of 242 pollinatio= ns onto eight varieties, 26 fruits were obtained from only six of the varietie= s. In addition to the ovules obtained from the cv. Invictus fruits, cv. Sagit = 146 fruits contained 65 ovules. While cv. Invictus ovules gave rise to plantlet= s, ovules from cv. Sagit 146 were lost due to contamination. Chromosome counting of e= ight in vitro plants of cv. Invictus showed cells with 24, 25 and 26 chromosomes. Haploid chromosome numbers were not observed in any of the cells studied. Potentials of the approach were also discussed.

Ø      The culture medium E20A was use= d as part of the dihaploidization technique in the geneticimprovement of Cucumis melo. During long term maintenance of haploid stock plants via subculture ofmicrocuttings, weak shoot development and death of plantlets were observe= d. Therefore in search of a suitablemedium to induce vigorous development of t= he long term maintained plantlets, the present experiment wasconducted. The ba= sic media E20A and MS were used with or without only one concentration of IAA, i.e., 0.01mg lG , in combination with one of the three concentrations of BA= P, i.e., 0.225 mg lG , 1.125 mg lG and 2.250 mg111lG . Plantlet length, number= of nodiums, callus length and diameter, rates of root and shoot initiation were1recorded weekly during culture. It was determined that while single shooting and up-to-the-standard plantletswere obtained using E20A medium containing 0.01= mg lG IAA (medium one), multi shooting plantlets with1shorter internodiums were obtained from the E20A medium only with 0.225 mg lG BAP (medium three). The1most desirable shoot development was obtained from the media without BAP but containing 0.01 mg lG IAA.1Integration of BAP into the media resulted in callus development which in turn restricted shoot development. It was conclu= ded that low salt media is more suitable for in vitro induction of axillary buds and shootdevelopment in melon.

High temperature tre= atment tested here, although considered effective in Capsicum anther culture, was detrimental and therefore flower buds from this treatment were not used. Following pretreatment at 10 °C microspores were isolated and cultured on NLN medium (20) without growth regulators. Osmoticum and carbon was supplied to= the microspores with 100, 130, and 170 g/1 sucrose. Only 170 g/1 culture was maintained and the rest of the cultures were lost to contamination. Callus colonies were obtained on the 30th and 60th days at rate of 40.5 and 67 %, respectively. Callus colonies were subcultured to MS media containing 2, 4-= D at 1 and 2 mg/1, but further development was not obtained. It was concluded th= at the approach adopted earlier on the cellular and molecular characterization studies of induced multinucleate Capsicum microspores (12, 14, 15) may lead= to high frequency regeneration of haploids via callus colonies, as obtained in= the present study, hence, isolated microspore culture using mannitol starvation= as pretreatment has potentiality in Capsicum annum L. breeding.

&= Oslash;      In this study, a digital sound leve= l meter was used to measure noise levels surrounding the tractor operator and in op= en air. Tractor, equipment and environmental conditions were taken into consideration as sources of noise pollution. Intensity of noise pollution caused by those sources was determined at the point where drivers and assis= tant driver stood. The influence of engine speeds and transmission gears on noise levels were determined. The level of annoyance depends not only the level of the noise but also operator =3D s position and the duration. The levels of = the noise when the tractor was in neutral were also measured. Maximum noise lev= el was measured in exhaust as 91.7 dBA while the minimum noise level was at the surrounding of the tractor operator as 79.7 dBA. An increasing of 3 dBA was measured for engine speed changes from 1000 to 2000 rpm.<= /p>

Ø      Productivit= y per unit area in agricultural production is getting more important from the poi= nt of view of both feeding the increasing population and increasing the income level of the farmers. However, keeping high productivity target or producti= on level depends on control of diseases and insects. Thrace region is among leading regions with regard to agricultural potential in Turkey. The produc= ts such as rice, sugar beet in irrigated areas in addition to wheat and sunflo= wer are grown on 95% of 1.2 million hectare agriculture land in the region. In = this study, pesticide usage has been analysed based on the data obtained from questionnaires made with wheat, sunflower and rice producers. Topics used in production of these products like trademark, purchase place, amount of usag= e of pesticides, conscience level of farmers, information sources have been examined. Gala lake as an important watery area is one of the most affected areas by pesticides. Flora and fauna as well as birds and fishes kinds in l= ake are affected by pesticides used in agricultural production. According to the results obtained from research findings, the amount of pesticide used per decare in terms of effective matter in wheat, sunflower and rice has been determined to be respectively 76.2, 87.6, 391.66 g/da. Considering that pesticide average is 63 g/da in Turkey, it has been concluded that the amou= nt of pesticide used for basis productions grown in region is much. Due to the wrong pesticide applications of the farmers, this case comes out to be a distinct environment problem which results in environment pollution in the Thrace region.

Ø      23 soybean = lines and 2 standard cultivars were used as material in this study conducted in 1994-1995 at Thrace University, Tekirdag Agricultural Faculty, Field Crops Department Research Area. In this study, 11 plant characters were observed. These are; plant height, number of branches per plant, the lowest pod heigh= t, number of pods per plant, shelling ratio, pod length, seed length, number of seeds= per pod, 1000 seeds weight, seed yield per plant and hectare. The path and the correlations were determined using single plant values.
The yield per hectare varied between 1023.6–4228.8 and 1266.3–3944.0 kg during 1994 and 1995, respectively. The plant yield showed positive and significant correlations with number of pods, number of branches, pod length and 1000 seed weight for both years; with plant height= , seed length, number of seeds per pod only during the first year. The correlations between seed yield per plant and the lowest pod height were significantly negative for both years. Number of pods maintained positive and significant correlations with plant height, number of branches, pod length, seed length, number of pods per plant and 1000 seeds weight while negative correlations = with the lowest pod height. The lowest pod height had negatively significant correlations with number of seeds per pod, seed length and pod length. Numb= er of pods and 1000 seeds weight effected directly as positive on seed yield. = The lowest pod height effected negatively via number of pod on yield. In additi= on in lateness lines for pod formation and their maturity, the total temperatu= re during growing period was insufficient. As the results, the 11 high yielding soybean lines consequently selected for the demonstration of yield trial.=

Ø      The conducted adaptation studies in 1991 in the field c= rops department area of TekirdagЎ Agricultural Faculty of Thrace Universit= y; showed that it is hopeful to find a place in Thrace plant rotation for pean= ut. However, some problems have to be removed for every market types. Although = the cultivars of Virginia and Runner had the highest yields, they gave the lowe= st earliness index values. Valencia and Spanish cultivars had the highest earliness values but they gave the lowest fruit yields per hectare. In line with the results of adaptation, the improvement studies of early maturing a= nd yielding peanut cultivars were started in 1992. The experiments were conduc= ted in 1992 and 1993. These studies strongthened the results of adaptation stud= ies. The selection criteria for three market types were determined based on bree= ding objects, correlation and path analysis. In this region, important selection criteria were seeds number per fruit, harvest index; fruits number per plan= t, single fruit weight, total plant weight, harvest index, 100 seed weight; to= tal plant weight, harvest index, plant height, the ratio forming fruit of pegs = for Virginia, Valencia, Spanish market types; respectively. <= /p>

&= Oslash;      In this research, 0 and 3 % slopes = were given to laserplane grade control system for two different soil conditions. Effect of different soil conditions on land-levelling was investigated. Unit operating cost and accuracy of machine were found. For this aim soil resistance, volume weight and specific gravity were found for two different= soil conditions. Human factor wasn't considered because operator wasn't changed. Accuracy of land-levelling for selected two grade angles was tested using w= ith nodal network system. Excavation-filling amount was determined for two field and two grade during land-levelling. Operating costs for unit time and unit area were calculated at the end of operations. Based on the experiment resu= lts, it has been found that a variation for first field is more than second fiel= d to excavation-filling amount. Desired grades for two field were obtained. = Ø      The description of the environmental problems and existing sources gets more important as regard solving the environmental problems. The policies which were depended on 'restoration' were supported first, but in time it was understood that these policies have no use and the policies depended on 'prevention' were preferred. Ø      = The availability of Genetically Mod= ified Organizms (GMO's) are increasing. A transgenic organizms or so called Genetically Modified Organizms (GMO) contains stably integrated recombinant= DNA in all it's cell . In other words the organizms whether it is a plant or an= imal or microorganizms has a new piece of DNA spliced into a chromosome in each = of its cell. This new piece of DNA typically contains a gene that was obtained from another organizms and was modified so that it would be expressed in the new organizms. Scientist can now be able develop crops with desirable traits more quickly than conventional methods. Scientist can introduce genes that endow plant with traits that could never be achieved through conventional methods presented below a review of some methods commonly employed in produ= cing transgenic organizms followed by an over wiev of same of the many polential ways theese products are used as a source of food. In this study, draft force, slip, forwarding speed and fuel consumption measurements of tillage equipme= nts in the re-gion such as, plough, chisel plough, cultivator, and combination = of spring-tine cultivator and harrow with spring teeth were determined. Measur= ing apparatus aided by computer, to determine the draft force of agricultural t= ools and machinery, is portable, universal and mountable easily on a tractor. In measuring slippage values and signals coming from magnetic receivers placed fixedly on the wheels were recorded and displayed on a special screen. It w= orks properly without being affected by the field slope. Both draft force and slippage apparatus proved to be reliable on measurements obtained.

&= Oslash;      Ready-to-serve salads are naturally= highly contaminated and often regarded as risky from to point of health. Total microbial counts as well as counts of lactic acid bacteria, total yeast and moulds counts, coliform bacteria, Escherichia coffand pathogen staphylococci were determined in 22 samples of ready-to-serve green salads and 14 samples= of ready-to-serve green salads with dressing, such as mayonnaise, which had be= en obtained from local retail stores. The pH ranged from 4.04 to 5.90. The tot= al aerobic count ranged from 5.0x to 2.0x cfu/g. Yeast and moulds were found in all samples and ranged from to 3.0x cfu/g. The lactic acid bacteria count ranged from 3.0x to 1.1 x cfu/g. Coliforms on the samples ranged from to 9.= 2x cfu/g and at the 34 samples out of 36 were found. At the 32 samples out of = 36 were found E coli and ranged from 25 to cfu/g. At the 25 samples out of 36 = were found S. aureus and ranged from 12 to 2.8x cfu/g. These results show that ready-to-serve salads, especially when they contain perishable ingredients, such as mayonnaise, may constitute a health risk.In storage experiments, microbiological growth at 10C for 72 hours was found higher than the growth at 4C significantly.

Ø      Depending on ochratoxin A (OA) concentration, ch= anges in OA content of wort and beer were determined during beer fermentation usi= ng Elisa method. After 10 days of fermentation, OA content of sample A, which includes approximately 10 ppb added OA, decreased 24.97 % while this figure= was 18.74 % in sample B which was contami-nated with 20 ppb OA. In sample C, wh= ich includes 30 ppb added OA, the level of OA decreased (8.9 %) less than the o= ther two samples. Degradation ratio of OA decreased as the OA concentration increased during fermentation. OA concentration negatively affected yeast growth during fermentation and therefore yeast growth was lower in OA containing samples than the others. The wort samples which contain high concentration of OA had lower yeast count compared with control group and w= ort samples containing low concentration of OA. A gradual decrease has been ob-served in pH value of the samples including high level of OA compared to these samples contaminated with low level of OA. Alcohol concentration of t= he samples decreased as OA concentration increased. At the beginning of fermenta-tion, total sugar ratio of all samples was 6.62 %. However, total sugar values were found higher in the samples which contained at high level= s of OA.

Ø      B. argentifolii (B. tabaci B biotyp= e) was found, for the first time, on vegetable fields in Mersin, located in the ea= st Mediterranean region of Turkey. This species was differentiated from B. tab= aci M biotype based on the characteristics of its tracheal fold, i.e. the mean tracheal fold of B. argentifolii was 21.5 micro m, while that of B. tabaci M biotype was 51.3 micro m. Since the autumn of 2000, B. argentifolii became widespread all over the area. Reproducing populations of this pest were observed mainly on squash and other vegetable hosts (such as bean, cucumber, tomato, pepper, radish and aubergine), cotton, citrus, and some ornamental hosts (Gerbera jamesonii, Euphorbia pulcherrima, E. milii var. splendens an= d E. neriifolia).

Ø      The emergence in Galleria mellonell= a larva, which was infected by Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, began on the ninth day after exposure to the former nematode and the sixth = day of exposure to the latter nematode (25 plus or minus 0.5 deg C). The average number of nematodes developing in each host was 13 829, and the range was f= rom 4365 to 27 510 for S. feltiae infection. The average number of nematodes per host was 141 562, and the range was 50 905-271 593 for H. bacteriophora infection. When the 2 different species were inoculated simultaneously into= the same host, H. bacteriophora caused higher mortality rates than S. feltiae. = As a result of the application of 2 nematode species to the same host at differe= nt times, the first nematode species to be inoculated was responsible for the highest mortality rate in all cases.

Ø      There are 18 faculties of agricultu= re in state universities in Turkey. 69.5% of students attending these faculties are high school graduates and o= nly 4.4% have received high quality education in special schools. The students mostly lack foreign language skills and only 15.9% of them can speak English fluently. Most of the students are working towards a diploma or degree in a= griculture. Over 75% of them are concerned about the future of agriculture and its abil= ity to provide them with a means of employment.
